Do you ever feel that your workplace reminds you of a circus? After our conversation with Bence Vági, founder of Recirquel Contemporary Circus, we can totally agree: as it turned out, the operation of a circus needs a strategy, a good team and a big batch of innovations.
Bence Vági has created a contemporary production for the 20th Sziget Festival in 2012 – the production’s name was Recirquel, and the success was incredible. Later, the production was formed into a company and nowadays, Recirquel operates with many talented professionals from acrobats to singers. As Bence said at the first Person meetup, they grew step by step: when they needed someone to handle events or marketing, they hired someone – this way, the growth was steady enough to dream bigger and bigger.
By now, Recirquel is known as one of the world’s most famous contemporary circus companies: they regularly tour around the world, famous theatres and festivals invite them to perform and they could even participate in such major events like the closing ceremony of the 17th FINA World Championships. Circus is considered a traditional art in Hungary: the roots of classical circus are reaching way back to the 1800’s, which are widely used by Recirquel as well, while they are constantly looking for ways to renew the genre and provide new ways to enjoy circus. Nowadays, circuses operate based on strict standards from work safety to animal welfare and also have many new aspects in which Recirquel performs exceptionally well: they are very well-acknowledged by critics and the audience as well. Their most current success is that they premiered their new performance called My Land at this year’s Fringe Festival and according to critics’ opinion, the performance was the best show not only at the Fringe, but also the entire 2018 Edinburgh Festival.
After hearing about all these success stories, the only question is how much they can grow further? Bence has answered our question really wisely: although they are aware of the recipe of further growth, they are doing it very consciously. Work-life balance is very important for the company, so they refuse to grow to a point where private life has to be put into the background. According to Bence, this balance is vital for a healthy operation, and seeing their work, we can completely agree with that: that’s what we call a real strategy!
